Kolkata, West Bengal, India
Amid intensifying political activity ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, BJP MP Mahesh Sharma addressed concerns over electoral processes following a key meeting with the Chief Electoral Officer of the state.
A BJP delegation met Manoj Kumar Agarwal, Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal, to discuss issues related to the conduct of elections and the overall administrative environment during polling. The meeting comes at a time when political parties are actively engaging with election authorities to ensure transparency and fairness.
Speaking after the meeting in Kolkata, Sharma alleged that constitutional norms have been compromised in previous elections under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee. “We met Manoj Agarwal to discuss the way Mamata Banerjee destroyed constitutional arrangements in these and previous elections,” he said, making a strong accusation against the ruling establishment.
Despite the criticism, Sharma emphasized that the BJP’s primary concern is not the outcome but the integrity of the electoral process. “We are ready to win or lose, but the elections should be fair,” he asserted, underscoring the party’s demand for a level playing field.
The statement reflects a broader trend in West Bengal’s political landscape, where allegations regarding law and order and election conduct have become central to campaign narratives. Opposition parties, particularly the BJP, have repeatedly raised concerns about voter intimidation and administrative bias, while the ruling party has dismissed such claims as politically motivated.
Election authorities, including the Chief Electoral Officer and the Election Commission, have maintained that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure peaceful and transparent polling. Security arrangements, monitoring mechanisms, and administrative oversight are being strengthened to uphold democratic standards.
Sharma’s remarks highlight the growing emphasis on electoral integrity in West Bengal, as political parties intensify their engagement with authorities to ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted in a free, fair, and impartial manner.
