Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Nand has assured citizens that the election process in the city was conducted peacefully and that strict measures are in place to maintain law and order in the post-poll period. Addressing concerns over security and public safety, he emphasized that the situation remains under control and that authorities are fully prepared to handle any disturbances.
Speaking in Kolkata, the Police Commissioner stated that the elections were carried out without any major incidents of violence or threats, ensuring that people were able to vote freely and fairly. He highlighted that maintaining this peaceful atmosphere remains the top priority for law enforcement agencies in the days following the results.
“The atmosphere on that day will be maintained, and it will remain the same in the coming days as well,” he said, expressing confidence in the preparedness of the police force. He also appealed to the public to cooperate with authorities and contribute to maintaining peace across the city.
A strong warning was issued against the spread of misinformation. Nand urged citizens not to pay attention to rumours and to rely only on verified information, adding that any concerns or issues should be immediately reported to the police. He emphasized that misinformation can create unnecessary panic and disrupt public order.
To ensure security, the Commissioner detailed the deployment of forces across Kolkata. He stated that 65 companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) along with 240 Quick Response Teams (QRTs) have been stationed in the city, significantly strengthening the law enforcement presence. These teams are actively monitoring sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incidents.
The Police Commissioner also clarified rules regarding public gatherings and processions. He stated that prior permission from the police will be mandatory for any procession or rally, and strict action will be taken against those organizing such events without approval. This measure is aimed at preventing spontaneous gatherings that could lead to unrest.
“We are taking action against those organising processions without permission,” he said, underlining the administration’s zero-tolerance approach toward violations of law and order protocols. He further added that certain types of rallies, including those involving heavy machinery such as JCBs, will not be allowed, as they pose safety and security risks.
Addressing concerns about possible attempts to create unrest, Nand issued a clear warning. He stated that any individual or group trying to create an atmosphere of fear or intimidation will face strict legal action, reinforcing the commitment to maintaining a safe environment for all citizens.
While acknowledging that minor incidents have occurred, the Commissioner clarified that there have been no major disturbances. He informed that around 80 individuals have been arrested in connection with various incidents, and weapons have also been recovered, indicating proactive steps taken by the police to prevent escalation.
Observers note that the detailed security arrangements and strict enforcement measures reflect the administration’s focus on ensuring stability during a sensitive period. Maintaining peace after elections is crucial, as tensions can rise due to political differences and heightened emotions.
