Kolkata, West Bengal

Indian tennis legend Leander Paes has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, marking a significant political development in the state. His entry into the party took place in the presence of Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar.

The former tennis star, known for his remarkable achievements on the global stage, appeared emotional during the occasion as he formally stepped into active politics. Speaking after joining the party, Paes reflected on his journey, saying that he has always worked to bring pride to his family and the country. He added that he now feels it is the right time to dedicate himself to serving the nation and contributing to the growth of the youth.

Welcoming him into the party, Sukanta Majumdar described the moment as significant and expressed confidence that Paes would inspire young people, especially in West Bengal. He highlighted Paes’s legacy in sports and said his presence would strengthen the party’s outreach, particularly among the youth. Majumdar also remarked that Paes’s entry reflects a growing political momentum in the state.

Leander Paes’s move comes at a crucial time, with the West Bengal Assembly elections approaching. His decision to join the BJP is being seen as an effort by the party to broaden its appeal by bringing in well known and respected public figures. Paes had earlier been associated with the All India Trinamool Congress, which he joined in 2021, making his switch to the BJP a notable shift in his political journey.

Beyond politics, Paes carries a rich legacy that extends into cultural history. He is a direct descendant of Michael Madhusudan Dutt, the renowned 19th century Bengali poet and dramatist. This connection adds another dimension to his identity, linking sports excellence with a deep cultural heritage rooted in Bengal.

Known for his passion, discipline, and commitment on the tennis court, Paes has long been admired as one of India’s greatest athletes. His transition into politics reflects a broader trend where public figures from sports and other fields step forward to take on roles in public life. Supporters believe that his experience, visibility, and connection with people could bring a fresh perspective to political engagement.

His emotional remarks during the joining ceremony resonated with many, as he spoke about moving from representing the country in sports to contributing to its development in a new way. The moment marked a personal shift for Paes, from a celebrated sports career to a new chapter in public service.

As political activity intensifies in West Bengal ahead of the elections, Paes’s entry is expected to draw attention and generate discussion. Whether on the tennis court or now in the political arena, his journey continues to evolve, with many watching closely to see how he shapes this new role.
