Sanand, (Gujarat) : Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Kaynes Semicon facility at Sanand GIDC in Gujarat, marking a significant step forward in India’s semiconductor journey. The event was attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel along with industry leaders and officials.
The facility, developed by Kaynes Technology, is an OSAT unit focused on semiconductor assembly and testing. Its launch represents an important milestone under the India Semiconductor Mission, as the country continues to build its presence in the global chip manufacturing ecosystem. It is among the early major semiconductor facilities in India, following the project by Micron Technology.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Prime Minister emphasized India’s rising importance in the global semiconductor supply chain. He stated that Kaynes has emerged as a strong part of the global semiconductor ecosystem and highlighted that Indian companies are preparing to offer a more resilient and reliable supply chain to the world. He further noted that the start of production at this facility signals India’s commitment to becoming a trusted semiconductor supplier.
A key highlight of the event was the symbolic handover of a Made in India semiconductor product. The Prime Minister, along with Ramesh Kannan Kothandaraman, founder and Managing Director of Kaynes Technology, presented the product to Stephen Chang, CEO of Alpha and Omega Semiconductor. This moment reflected India’s growing capability to not only manufacture but also contribute meaningfully to global technology partnerships.
The inauguration also saw the Prime Minister interacting with people present at the facility, including employees, engineers, and stakeholders involved in the project. The interaction added a human dimension to the event, as he engaged with those directly contributing to India’s semiconductor ambitions.
The Kaynes Semicon plant is expected to play a crucial role in supporting industries such as electronics, electric vehicles, telecommunications, and industrial manufacturing. With increasing global demand for semiconductors, the facility positions India to meet both domestic needs and international requirements.
The launch of this plant reinforces India’s push toward self reliance in critical technologies while also strengthening its position in global supply chains. It reflects a broader strategy of combining domestic manufacturing capabilities with international collaboration.
Sanand is steadily emerging as a key hub for semiconductor and electronics manufacturing, supported by strong infrastructure and policy initiatives. The establishment of facilities like Kaynes Semicon is expected to attract further investment and create opportunities for skilled employment.
With production now underway, the Kaynes Semicon facility represents not just a new industrial unit, but a clear signal of India’s intent to become a major player in the global semiconductor landscape.
