KOLKATA, WEST BENGAL — West Bengal Congress President Subhankar Sarkar has criticised the BJP following the failure of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha, alleging that the move was politically motivated.
Speaking in Kolkata, Sarkar claimed that the BJP intended to use the bill for political advantage in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, calling the situation “very unfortunate.” He suggested that the timing and manner in which the bill was brought forward raised questions about the government’s intent.
Sarkar said that all opposition parties came together to oppose the bill, and he congratulated Members of Parliament who stood against it. According to him, the opposition’s collective stance reflected concerns over the way the legislation was structured and presented.

The Congress leader also indicated that the opposition’s resistance was based on broader concerns, including the linkage of the bill with delimitation and its potential political implications. He maintained that these factors led to a lack of trust and ultimately contributed to the bill not securing the required support.
His remarks come amid a wider political debate following the rejection of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which aimed to ensure 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies but failed to achieve the necessary two-thirds majority.
While the ruling alliance has accused opposition parties of blocking a historic reform, opposition leaders have countered by alleging that the government’s approach introduced unnecessary complications and political considerations.
Political observers note that the issue has become a key talking point ahead of elections, particularly in states like West Bengal, where both the ruling party and opposition are actively shaping their narratives.
Sarkar reiterated that women’s rights should not be subject to electoral strategy, and called for a more sincere and unified effort to bring meaningful reforms that genuinely empower women.
