BJP leader Shishir Bajoria has strongly criticised outgoing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her refusal to resign after the Assembly election results, describing the situation as unprecedented in India’s democratic history.
Speaking in Kolkata, Bajoria said that never before had a defeated Chief Minister publicly declared that they would not resign despite losing political authority after an election. He argued that such a stance weakens democratic traditions and sends the wrong message about constitutional accountability.
“Never before in the history of our country has it happened that a defeated Chief Minister declares that they will not resign,” Bajoria said while reacting to Mamata Banerjee’s recent statements following the election outcome.
The BJP leader stated that after the election verdict, the government had effectively lost its mandate to continue in power. According to him, democratic systems function on the principle that elected governments must respect the people’s verdict, regardless of political disagreement or dissatisfaction with the outcome.
Bajoria further remarked that if Mamata Banerjee had formally submitted her resignation after the results, she could have maintained her political reputation and democratic image. Instead, he claimed, her refusal created an impression that she does not fully trust the democratic process and constitutional framework.
“Had you tendered your resignation, you would have preserved your reputation,” he said, adding that the current situation has become “a unique, albeit unfortunate, chapter” in the country’s political history.
The controversy began after Mamata Banerjee stated publicly that she would not resign and claimed that her party had not morally lost the election. She alleged that attempts were made to defeat the Trinamool Congress (TMC) through institutional mechanisms and questioned aspects of the election process.
