Kolkata, West Bengal, India
In a move aimed at strengthening cultural ties and promoting cinematic exchange, the Chinese Consulate General in Kolkata has announced the आयोजन of a Chinese Film Festival in the city, scheduled to begin on April 17.
Speaking about the initiative, Xu Wei said that the idea for the festival emerged from the strong interest shown by Indian audiences during his earlier visit in 2024. He noted that many Indian viewers expressed enthusiasm for Chinese cinema, particularly genres such as Kung-Fu, martial arts, and romantic films.
He highlighted that the growing popularity of Chinese movies among Indian audiences encouraged the decision to organise another film festival in Kolkata.
The upcoming festival will feature a curated selection of seven Chinese films spanning different genres, offering audiences a broader perspective of contemporary Chinese cinema. The films are expected to include a mix of action, drama, romance, and cultural narratives, reflecting the diversity of storytelling in China.
The screenings will take place at the iconic Nandan theatre in Kolkata, with support and facilitation from the venue. Nandan is known as a major cultural hub in the city, frequently hosting film festivals and artistic events.
The choice of Nandan as the venue underscores the cultural significance of the event and its aim to reach a wide audience of cinema enthusiasts.
Xu Wei emphasized that such initiatives play an important role in enhancing people to people connections between India and China. Cultural exchanges through cinema are seen as a way to foster mutual understanding and appreciation between the two countries.
He also indicated that the festival aims to present not just entertainment but also cultural narratives, traditions, and modern perspectives from China, allowing Indian audiences to experience a different cultural lens.
The festival is expected to serve as a platform for cultural dialogue, bringing audiences closer through the shared language of cinema.
The announcement comes at a time when cultural diplomacy continues to play an important role in international relations, with film festivals acting as bridges between societies.
With a diverse lineup of films and a well known venue, the Chinese Film Festival in Kolkata is expected to attract significant interest from movie lovers and cultural enthusiasts alike.
As preparations begin for the April 17 event, the festival is set to become a notable cultural highlight in Kolkata’s vibrant arts calendar.
