Great news has arrived for the six lakh daily commuters of the Kolkata Metro Blue Line! In a massive boost to urban mobility, India’s oldest metro network is undergoing a historic infrastructure modernization program backed by a substantial ₹671.72 crore central government sanction.

Because aluminium has significantly higher electrical conductivity than steel, it reduces voltage loss, allowing trains to accelerate much faster. Additionally, it minimizes heat generation inside tunnels, which lowers the burden on the trains’ air-conditioning systems and reduces carbon emissions by an estimated 50,000 tonnes over its lifetime.

2. Powerful Energy Overhaul with New Substations

To support faster train intervals, a whopping ₹291.06 crore is being deployed to construct seven brand-new traction substations at key stations, including Kalighat, Esplanade, Maidan, Netaji Bhawan, MG Road, Sovabazar, and a dedicated unit between Belgachia and Dum Dum. The Blue Line is preparing to graduate from its legacy Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS) to the state-of-the-art Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system. Operational Relief for Southern Terminals

Commuters traveling on the southern end of the Blue Line have already received vital relief. Following structural maintenance closures at the Kavi Subhash terminal, the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) granted a special temporary operational exemption.

This allows incoming passenger trains to move efficiently toward Shahid Khudiram while empty rakes utilize the track switching zones. This smart scheduling fix has successfully restored the system to 98 percent timetable accuracy, eliminating the frustrating bottlenecks that previously caused major delays.

Furthermore, to ensure the absolute long-term durability of the entire track network, Metro Railway has initiated a ₹43.36 crore viaduct rehabilitation tender to repair and strengthen structural elements between Dakshineswar and Dum Dum, and Tollygunge to Kavi Subhash.
