India on Wednesday commemorated the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, a major military operation launched by Indian armed forces against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The anniversary was marked with tributes to the armed forces, remembrance of those who lost their lives, and renewed emphasis on India’s commitment to national security and counter-terrorism.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the armed forces through a message shared on social media, praising their bravery and professionalism during the operation. Referring to the military action carried out a year ago, Modi said the armed forces displayed “unparalleled courage, precision and resolve” while responding to the terror attack in Pahalgam that had shocked the nation.
“A year ago, our armed forces displayed unparalleled courage, precision and resolve during Operation Sindoor. They gave a fitting response to those who dared to attack innocent Indians at Pahalgam. The entire nation salutes our forces for their valour,” the Prime Minister said.
Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7, 2025, in response to escalating terror threats and the deadly attack on civilians in Jammu and Kashmir. The operation targeted nine terror locations allegedly linked to organisations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen.
According to official accounts released at the time, the operation involved coordinated action by the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy, making it one of India’s largest tri-service military responses in recent decades. Military officials had stated that advanced weapon systems, including BrahMos missiles and more than 100 aircraft, were deployed during the operation.
The strikes reportedly targeted terror launch pads, training centres, and logistical facilities across Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and parts of mainland Pakistan. Indian authorities claimed that more than 100 terrorists were eliminated during the operation, though these figures were disputed by Pakistan.
The military confrontation led to a sharp rise in tensions between India and Pakistan during May 2025. Cross-border exchanges, retaliatory strikes, and aerial engagements were reported over several days, making it one of the most intense military confrontations between the two nuclear-armed neighbours since the 1971 war.
India also suffered casualties during the conflict. Official reports stated that 21 civilians and 8 military personnel lost their lives due to retaliatory attacks from Pakistan, while several others were injured in border areas.
A ceasefire understanding was eventually reached on May 10, 2025, following diplomatic efforts and international engagement, including reported mediation attempts by the United States. The ceasefire helped reduce immediate military tensions, although political and diplomatic relations between the two countries remained strained.
Operation Sindoor also marked a major shift in India’s security doctrine. The Indian government signalled that acts of terrorism originating across the border would increasingly be treated as acts of war rather than isolated security incidents.
Following the operation, India announced several strong diplomatic and economic measures against Pakistan, including suspension of aspects of the Indus Waters Treaty and restrictions on trade relations.
In his anniversary message, Prime Minister Modi said Operation Sindoor reflected India’s firm stand against terrorism and demonstrated the growing strength and coordination of the country’s armed forces. He also highlighted India’s increasing self-reliance in the defence sector, stating that indigenous capabilities have significantly strengthened national security preparedness.
The Prime Minister further noted that the operation showcased the “jointness” among India’s military branches — the Army, Navy, and Air Force — reflecting improved coordination and strategic planning.
On the anniversary, the Indian Air Force reportedly shared videos and visuals related to the operation, including footage of aerial missions and strike preparations. Tributes poured in from military veterans, political leaders, and citizens across social media platforms, with many describing the operation as a defining moment in India’s modern security history.
Security analysts say Operation Sindoor had long-term implications for regional geopolitics and India’s defence strategy. The operation reinforced India’s willingness to conduct coordinated cross-border military responses against terror threats while also accelerating investments in indigenous defence technology and military modernisation.
As India observed the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, tributes focused not only on military success but also on the sacrifices made by soldiers and civilians during the conflict. The anniversary served as a reminder of the continuing challenges of regional security and the country’s declared commitment to combating terrorism with firmness and strategic preparedness.
