Kolkata, West Bengal
BJP spokesperson Keya Ghosh has strongly condemned the murder of Chandranath, personal assistant to senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, alleging that individuals associated with the BJP are being deliberately targeted in the aftermath of the Assembly elections.
Speaking in Kolkata, Ghosh claimed that the attack was not an isolated incident but part of a broader attempt to intimidate BJP workers and supporters. She stated that those who worked closely with the BJP and managed organisational activities for Suvendu Adhikari in Bhabanipur were specifically being targeted.
According to Ghosh, the incident has created concern among party workers across different parts of the state. She suggested that many BJP supporters are worried about their safety during the politically sensitive post-election period, especially as tensions continue between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
The murder of Chandranath has already triggered sharp political reactions from several BJP leaders, who have described the incident as evidence of continuing political violence in West Bengal. The BJP has repeatedly accused the previous political system in the state of encouraging intimidation, clashes, and attacks on opposition workers, allegations that the TMC has denied.
Despite the strong criticism, Keya Ghosh also appealed to BJP workers and supporters to remain calm and avoid retaliation. “I request all our workers to maintain peace,” she said, emphasising that the party does not want further escalation of tensions.
Her remarks reflected an effort by the BJP leadership to project restraint and administrative responsibility following its major electoral victory in West Bengal. Ghosh stated that the incoming government would represent “change, not revenge,” indicating that the BJP intends to distinguish its governance approach from the political culture it has criticised in the state.
She further claimed that the people of West Bengal voted for the BJP with the hope of ending what she described as “goonda raj,” a term commonly used in political discourse to refer to criminal influence and violent intimidation in governance. According to her, voters supported the BJP because they wanted a safer and more transparent political environment.
At the same time, Ghosh stressed that any response to the murder and related incidents would take place strictly within the legal framework. She stated that the BJP government would act according to the law and ensure that those responsible for the killing are identified and punished.
“Those who are behind this murder will not be spared,” she said, underlining the party’s demand for a thorough investigation and accountability. Her comments align with statements made by several other BJP leaders who have called for swift police action and stronger law enforcement measures in the state.
The incident comes at a time when West Bengal remains politically charged after the Assembly election results. Reports of post-poll clashes, vandalism, and confrontations between rival groups have continued to emerge from different districts, prompting concerns over stability and security.
Political analysts note that the murder of a close aide to Suvendu Adhikari carries major symbolic significance because of Adhikari’s central role in the BJP’s rise in West Bengal. As one of the party’s most influential leaders in the state, any attack involving individuals associated with him is likely to have broader political implications.
Meanwhile, investigative agencies are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding Chandranath’s murder. Police are reportedly analysing forensic evidence, CCTV footage, witness accounts, and vehicle details to identify the attackers and determine the motive behind the crime.
Authorities have not yet officially confirmed any political link to the murder, and investigations remain ongoing. Officials have appealed to political parties and the public to avoid speculation and allow the investigation process to proceed independently.
Observers believe the case will remain a major issue in West Bengal politics in the coming days. The way the administration handles the investigation and the broader law-and-order situation could significantly influence public confidence during the transition to a new government.
As tensions continue, Keya Ghosh’s remarks highlight the BJP’s attempt to combine strong criticism of political violence with calls for restraint and lawful action. The party is seeking to present itself as a force of political change while promising strict accountability for those involved in violence and intimidation in the state.
