Saugata Roy Opposes Proposed Delimitation Bill, Flags Concerns Over Impact on Southern States…

Date:

KOLKATA, WEST BENGAL — Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Saugata Roy has voiced strong opposition to the proposed delimitation exercise, stating that his party, along with other opposition groups, will vote against it.

Speaking in Kolkata, Roy said that there is significant uncertainty regarding the government’s intentions behind the proposed delimitation, describing the policy as flawed and concerning. He emphasized that the opposition is united in resisting the move.

Roy further warned that the proposed changes could disproportionately affect southern Indian states, raising concerns about fairness in representation and the balance of power among regions. According to him, such a shift could have long-term political implications.

He reiterated that the TMC is firmly against the proposal and will actively oppose it in Parliament, aligning with the broader stance of several opposition parties that have raised similar objections in recent discussions.

The remarks come amid an intensifying national debate over delimitation, particularly in the context of its linkage with the Women’s Reservation framework and future electoral restructuring. Opposition leaders have been calling for greater transparency and clarity, while expressing concerns about the potential redistribution of parliamentary seats based on population trends.

Supporters of the process, however, maintain that delimitation is a constitutional exercise aimed at ensuring equitable representation as demographics change, and should be carried out in accordance with legal provisions following the census.

Roy’s comments add to the growing political discourse on the issue, highlighting regional concerns and the need for wider consultation. The debate is expected to remain a key issue in Parliament, with both the government and opposition presenting contrasting views on its implications.

The opposition to the delimitation proposal underscores the broader concerns around federal balance and representation, as political parties continue to engage in a sharp debate over the future of India’s electoral map.
