“Why Oppose ‘Jai Shri Ram’?”: Smriti Irani Targets Mamata Banerjee Over Remarks…

Amid the intensifying political atmosphere in West Bengal ahead of Assembly elections, senior BJP leader Smriti Irani launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, raising questions over her stance on religious expressions, voter integrity, and alleged support for infiltrators.

Addressing the media in Kolkata, Irani referred to the chant of “Jai Shri Ram,” calling it a symbol of cultural pride and victory. “This is the chant of Jai Shri Ram, a victory slogan and somewhere, Mamata Banerjee is very upset. I don’t know why, when the name of Lord Ram is taken, the leaders and supporters of Trinamool Congress get so agitated,” she said.

Her remarks come in the backdrop of frequent political confrontations in the state where the slogan has often become a flashpoint between the BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). The BJP has consistently projected it as an expression of faith and identity, while TMC leaders have at times alleged its political misuse.

Targeting Banerjee more directly, Irani questioned her statements and their implications. “…What difference does it make by her saying so? Since when has a Hindustani become a stranger in his own country?” she asked, framing the issue as one of national identity and belonging.

She further escalated her criticism by raising concerns about voter integrity and alleged infiltration. “The question arises, why does the Chief Minister of West Bengal support infiltrators?” Irani said, adding, “Why doesn’t the Chief Minister want the votes of legitimate Indian voters?”

Irani also defended the role of the Election Commission in maintaining electoral transparency. “Instead of supporting the Election Commission so that infiltrators cannot vote in West Bengal, the Election Commission is being insulted,” she alleged, suggesting that the poll body is facing undue criticism.

The BJP leader’s remarks reflect the party’s broader campaign narrative in West Bengal, which has focused heavily on issues such as illegal immigration, electoral roll verification, and cultural identity. The Trinamool Congress, on the other hand, has accused the BJP of polarizing voters and politicizing religion.

Political analysts note that such sharp exchanges are likely to intensify as polling dates approach, with both sides seeking to consolidate their respective voter bases.

Irani’s statements underline the deepening political divide in West Bengal, where debates over identity, governance, and electoral processes continue to shape the campaign narrative.
